Best Time to Visit Ephesus: Month by Month, Honestly

The best time to visit Ephesus is April, May, late September and October. In these months the weather is warm but comfortable, the marble streets are calmer, and spring brings wildflowers while autumn keeps the sea warm for swimming. July and August are very hot, so come at the 08:00 opening or join a night visit in the evening. Winter is the quiet season; Ephesus is open every day of the year, and in January you can walk the Curetes Street almost alone. The month decides the weather, and the hour of the day decides the crowd.

I guide in Ephesus in all twelve months, in the heat, in the rain and in the beautiful weeks in between. Let’s have a look at the subject of the best time to visit Ephesus, month by month and honestly.

The Short Answer

If a guest asks me for one single answer, I say the last two weeks of April or the first three weeks of October. The days are warm, around 20 to 27 degrees, the light is good, and the site is lively but not overwhelmed. May and September are nearly as good, only a little hotter and a little busier.

Maybe that sounds like I am against the summer, but I am not. Summer in Ephesus is completely doable with an early start, and in the recent summers there are night visits too. We can say that no month is a wrong month; some months only ask for a better plan. Also, remember that Ephesus Ancient City is built on a hillside with marble streets, so the heat matters more here than it does on a normal city visit.

Spring: April to Mid-June

Spring is my favorite season in Ephesus. The hillside turns green, and wildflowers grow amongst the ruins, such as; poppies, daisies and wild camomile. April days are usually between 18 and 25 degrees. The mornings can be fresh, so a light jacket is a good idea.

In May the temperatures climb and the cruise season grows with them. The middays get busy, but the mornings and the late afternoons stay very pleasant. By the middle of June the real summer heat arrives, and from that point the advice of the next section applies.

Besides, spring is the season when the storks come back to their nests on the old aqueduct in Selçuk, and I always show them to my guests on the way.

High Summer: The Heat, Honestly

I will be honest with you. July and August in Ephesus are hot. The daytime temperatures are routinely between 33 and 38 degrees, sometimes more, and there is almost no shade in the whole Ephesus. The marble reflects the sun back on you, so the felt heat is stronger than the number.

However, thousands of people visit every summer day and enjoy it. The trick is timing. In summer the site is open roughly from 08:00 to 20:00, and the ticket offices close earlier than the gates. Be on the entrance at 08:00, start from the upper gate, and you will be going down the hill along the marble streets while the air is still cool. By 11:00 you have seen the site, and the Terrace Houses are under a protective roof, so they are the shadiest part of the visit!

In addition, there is now a second summer option: night visits. In the 2026 season Ephesus opens on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, from 19:00 till 23:00, with ticket sales ending at 22:00. The entry at night is from the lower gate only. The season started on the 3rd of June and runs until early October, and in the past it was extended into the autumn too. Also, on concert evenings the night visits pause, so check the official announcements before you plan around them. I wrote more about this in my article about night tours and concerts in Ephesus.

Autumn: September to Early November

September begins as a summer month. The first two weeks are still hot and the site is still busy, but the afternoons are helped by the imbat (the cool sea breeze of the Aegean), and the evenings soften week by week.

October is considered as the sweet spot amongst many of my guests, and I agree with them. The days are warm and settled, the middays are still busy with the ships, and the sea in Kuşadası stays warm for swimming till the end of the month. It is a fine plan to walk Ephesus in the morning and swim in the afternoon.

In early November the crowds thin quickly. The light gets soft and low, which is very good for photographs, and the first serious rains usually wait until the end of the month.

Winter: The Secret Season

Ephesus is open every day of the year. There is no closing day, not in December and not in January. The winter opening hours are shorter, around 08:00 to 18:00, and the daytime temperatures are mostly between 10 and 15 degrees, which is honestly a comfortable walking weather.

Most of the rain falls between December and February, but it rarely rains the whole day. The Ancient City of Ephesus in winter is very quiet and very peaceful. You hear your own steps on the marble, the cats follow you along the street, and you can photograph the Library of Celsus with nobody standing in front of it.

Rain itself is not a reason to cancel. One of my memorable days at the site was a tour under the rain in Ephesus, and I still smile when I remember it. Bring a rain jacket and be careful on the Curetes Street, since wet marble is slippery.

The Daily Rhythm: When the Site Is Emptiest

Whatever the month is, the clock matters. Ephesus has two gates, the upper gate (also called as the Magnesia Gate) and the lower gate, about two kilometers apart on the hillside. Most visitors start on the upper gate and walk down.

The cruise groups, which come from the port of Kuşadası, which is only a half hour away and welcomes some of the biggest ships of the Mediterranean, arrive to the site in the late morning almost like a tide. Roughly between 10:00 and 14:00 the site is at its fullest. Before 09:30 and after 15:00 it is far quieter. I like watching the first groups arrive; it means the season is alive and the town is working.

I check the Kuşadası port schedule almost every evening, because the ships decide the rhythm of the next day. When three or four ships are in the port together, the first big groups reach the Library of Celsus around 10:30, and the marble street stays full till about 13:30, when the groups begin walking back for the lunch on board. Guests who meet me at 08:00 see the library almost alone, and by the time the tide comes in, we are already inside the cool of the Terrace Houses.

How I Plan a Day Around Heat and Ships

When guests hire me for a day of guiding, the plan starts the evening before, with the port schedule and the weather forecast. In summer we meet at 08:00 at the upper gate and walk down while it is cool, we take the Terrace Houses in the middle of the visit for the shade, and we finish before the strongest heat. Later the House of Virgin Mary waits on the mountain, where the air is cooler, and the museum in Selçuk is a good choice for the afternoon.

In spring and autumn the plan relaxes. We can meet at 09:00, take our time on the marble street, and let the site empty around us in the late afternoon. In winter I watch the sky, and we simply walk in the dry window of the day, with a warm glass of tea when the rain passes.

One practical note: I arrange the entrance tickets in advance, so my guests skip the ticket queue. The tickets are always paid separately by the guest, since my fee covers the guiding only.
