Yes, you can visit Ephesus at night in the summer months. In the 2026 season the ancient city opens on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, between 19:00 and 23:00, and the box office sells tickets till 22:00. The entrance at night is only from the lower gate. The night season started on 3 June 2026 and continues until early October, and some years it is extended into the autumn. Museum passes are not accepted for the night sessions, so you buy a separate night ticket on the entrance. Besides the night openings, the famous summer concerts in the Great Theatre of Ephesus continue too.
People have always wondered how an ancient city looks after the sun goes down. For many years the answer in Ephesus stayed a mystery, because the site closed its gates in the evening and only the guards and the cats stayed inside. Now the Ministry of Culture and Tourism runs a program which is called as Gece Müzeciliği (night museology), and Ephesus is amongst the sites in this program. Let’s have a look at the subject of Ephesus at night.
Can You Visit Ephesus at Night?
During the daytime, Ephesus welcomes a great number of visitors every day of the year, in the summer roughly between 08:00 in the morning and 20:00 in the evening. But on four evenings of the week, the real fun starts after the big groups leave. The cruise ships sail back from Kuşadası, the parking lots empty, and the ancient city gets ready for its second shift.
The night visits started in 2024 as a part of the night museology program, and they were loved very much. Ephesus, which is already the most visited ancient city of our country and famous around the whole world, became one of the few places where you can walk on original marble streets under the night sky.
The Summer Night Openings: Days and Hours
The night openings of 2026 began on Wednesday, 3 June. The open nights are Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The gates open at 19:00 and the site closes at 23:00, and the ticket sales continue till 22:00. On the other three nights of the week, Ephesus rests.
Please remember that you can enter only from the lower gate at night. The upper gate, which most of the daytime visitors use for starting their walk downhill, stays closed in the evenings. Also, the night visits pause on the evenings when there is a big concert in the Great Theatre. The dates change every year, so check the official page of the museum before you go, or simply ask me and I will check the calendar for you.
The season officially continues until the beginning of October, and in some years it was extended, so if you are coming in the autumn, ask before you plan your evening.
What Ephesus Feels Like After Dark
I take guests in for the evening light a few times every summer, and there is one detail I always show them. Stand on the Marble Road around nine o’clock and put your hand on one of the big paving stones. The marble is still warm, because it keeps the heat of the afternoon sun for hours after the sky gets dark. Meanwhile the floodlights come on at the Library of Celsus, and the facade shines like honey. The cats of Ephesus come out at this hour too, and they pose on the warm stones just like supermodels!
The other thing you will notice is the silence. In the daytime you hear thousands of footsteps and dozens of languages amongst the columns. At night you hear your own steps and the crickets, and not much else. We can say that the night gives back to Ephesus something the daytime crowds take away.
Concerts in the Great Theatre
Concerts and shows have a long history in Ephesus. Odeon is mostly used for the little concerts and storytelling, the Library of Celsus is used for operettas, and the Great Theatre of Ephesus, which started its life as a Greek theater and later transformed into a Roman one, and which could hold about 24,000 spectators in the ancient times, is used for the great events. The amazing acoustics of the ancient theater still work today without any modern trick.
Every summer, mostly between July and September, the International Ephesus Opera and Ballet Festival and several other concerts take place here. Over the years, many world-famous names performed in Ephesus, such as;

In addition, some cruise companies and travel agents organize private dinners and small concerts in the site, and they are lovely evenings too. On the concert evenings the normal night visits are suspended, since the theatre and the streets around it are used for the event.
Night Tickets and What They Cost
In the daytime, the entrance ticket of Ephesus is 40 Euros, and it includes the Ephesus Experience Museum inside the site. The Terrace Houses need a separate ticket of 15 Euros. The prices are written in Euros on the official tariff, but you pay in Turkish Liras or by bank card on the entrance, because euro cash is not accepted at the ticket offices. For the night sessions the rules are a little different. Museum Pass Türkiye and the Aegean museum pass are valid in the daytime, but they are not accepted after 19:00, so everybody buys a separate night ticket at the lower gate. I do not want to write the night tariff here, because prices change and I do not like giving my guests old numbers. Ask me shortly before your visit and I will tell you the current price.
Tips From My Evening Walks
I recommend wearing comfortable shoes with a good grip. The marble streets of Ephesus were polished by two thousand years of footsteps, and they can be slippery in the evening too. Bring a small bottle of water, and a light jacket if you come in late September. The monuments are illuminated, but the light is not everywhere, so watch your steps between the buildings. Besides, arrange your transport back to Selçuk or Kuşadası in advance, because you will come out late in the evening.
The area around the Library of Celsus, the Marble Road and the Arcadian Way is the flattest part of the whole Ephesus, so the lower gate entrance helps guests with limited mobility too. Ask me about your situation before you come, and I will tell you honestly what to expect.
Is a Night Visit Better Than a Morning One?
They are two different cities with the same name, and I love both of them. In the morning, you will see the details. The reliefs, the inscriptions and the mosaics need daylight, and the Terrace Houses are a daytime pleasure in my opinion. If it is your first visit to Ephesus, I recommend the morning, right at the opening hour, before the cruise groups arrive between 10:00 and 14:00.
The night visit is for the atmosphere. In July and August the temperature during the day passes 35 degrees easily, and the site has almost no shade. At 20:00 the air is soft, the marble glows under the lights, and you share the streets with a handful of people instead of thousands. It is a completely different memory.
We can say that the perfect plan is doing both, a morning for the knowledge and a night for the feeling. If you must choose only one, choose the morning for your first meeting with Ephesus, and keep the night for the second one.
