How to Get to Ephesus from İzmir, Kuşadası or Istanbul

Ephesus Ancient City stands beside the small town of Selçuk in western Turkey, about 3 kilometers from the town centre. From İzmir Airport (ADB) the trip takes around one hour, by car or by train. From Kuşadası it is a short ride of about 30 minutes. From İzmir city centre count about one hour by car, a little more by train, and from Istanbul the practical way is a flight of a little over one hour to İzmir, followed by one more hour on the road. There is no station or airport called as “Ephesus”; you travel to Selçuk, and the ancient city is waiting just outside the town.

People have been finding their way to Ephesus for thousands of years. Pilgrims, merchants and emperors all arrived here when the roads were dust and the harbor was still full of ships. The harbor is gone now, but the visitors keep coming, and almost every guest asks me the same question before anything else. Let’s have a look at the subject of getting to Ephesus.

Where Ephesus Actually Is

Many visitors imagine Ephesus as a town where they can stay overnight. Actually, Ephesus is an archaeological site, and nobody has lived in it for centuries. The living town next to it is Selçuk, and the closest holiday town is Kuşadası, which is my home town. I explained the geography in more detail in my article about the location of Ephesus Ancient City, but the short version is simple: Selçuk is your base, and Ephesus is about 3 kilometers from its centre.

The site itself is built on a hillside and it has two gates. The upper gate, also known as the Magnesia Gate, is on the high end, and the lower gate, which is the main entrance, is on the low end. The two gates are about 2 kilometers apart. This detail matters for your planning, and I will come back to it when we arrive in Selçuk.

For the distances, Kuşadası is about 20 kilometers away, İzmir Airport is about 60 kilometers, and İzmir city centre is about 80 kilometers. Istanbul is far, around 550 kilometers, and this is why almost everyone flies.

From İzmir Airport (ADB): Train, Car or Transfer

İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport is the airport of Ephesus, we can say that. It sits on the southern side of İzmir, so you do not enter the city traffic at all when you drive to Selçuk. By car or private transfer the ride takes around 45 minutes to one hour.

The airport has its own railway station too, and this surprises many of my guests. There are two ways to use it. The first way is the direct regional train to Selçuk, which takes a little more than one hour; it is comfortable and very cheap, but it runs only every few hours. The second way is the İZBAN suburban train, which runs much more often; you ride it to Tepeköy station and change there to the regional train to Selçuk. In total there are roughly hourly connections through the day, but please check the TCDD and İZBAN timetables before you fly, because the schedules change from season to season.

Taxis wait on the entrance of the terminal at all hours. A taxi is the fastest door-to-door option, and if you land in the evening it is the sensible one, since the trains do not wait for late flights. Also, many hotels in Selçuk and Kuşadası arrange a private transfer if you write to them in advance.

From İzmir City Centre

If you are staying in İzmir, the train is the classic way. Regional trains leave from Basmane station in the city centre towards Selçuk a few times a day. Besides, you can take the İZBAN suburban line from many stations in the city and change at Tepeköy, same as from the airport. The whole trip takes around one and a half hours depending on the connection.

By car it is about one hour on the motorway. In addition, buses leave İzmir otogar (the main bus station) towards Selçuk and Kuşadası through the whole day. Maybe the bus is not as romantic as the train, but it is frequent and dependable, and it leaves you at the otogar right in the centre of Selçuk.

From Kuşadası: the 20-Minute Hop

Kuşadası is the closest base to Ephesus, about 20 kilometers away, and the ride takes 20 to 30 minutes. If you are curious about the town itself, I wrote about Kuşadası town separately.

The local way is the dolmuş (shared minibus). Dolmuşes leave from Kuşadası otogar towards Selçuk roughly every half hour in the season, less often in the winter, and the fare is small. They follow the main road which passes the Ephesus junction, and the driver will let you off there if you ask.

I live in Kuşadası and I meet my guests at the Ephesus gates almost every week of the year. One small thing I always tell them: when you take the dolmuş, say “Efes” to the driver, and he will stop for you on the junction on the main road, not on the gate itself. From that junction till the lower gate ticket office it is about a ten-minute flat walk. So if we agreed to meet at the gate at a certain hour, please give yourself that extra ten minutes.

Many of my guests come with the cruise ships too. The ships offer their own excursions, which are well organized and reliable, and taxis wait by the port gate for the independent guests. From Istanbul: Fly, Then Decide

Istanbul to Ephesus is around 550 kilometers, and driving takes six to seven hours on the motorway. Turkey is a beautiful country to drive through, and if Ephesus is one stop on a longer road trip, the drive makes sense. However, if Ephesus is the goal, fly.

Flights from both Istanbul airports to İzmir take a little over one hour, and there are many of them every day, from early morning till late evening. When you land at İzmir Airport, you continue exactly as I described above: train, taxi or transfer, and you are in Selçuk in about one hour more. So you can have your breakfast in Istanbul and stand in front of the Library of Celsus before lunch.

Also, there are overnight buses from Istanbul to Selçuk and Kuşadası. Turkish intercity buses are comfortable and the tickets are not expensive, but you will spend the whole night on the road. I recommend the bus only to the travelers who enjoy this style of traveling.

Arriving in Selçuk: Station, Otogar and the Last Two Kilometres

Selçuk is a small and friendly town, and everything a visitor needs is in walking distance. The train station is on the eastern edge of the town centre, a just couple of minutes walking from the shops and restaurants. The otogar is right in the centre, close to the Ephesus Museum and the old aqueduct with the stork nests on it. From the town there is one last piece of the trip, about 3 kilometers to the lower gate. Taxis wait at the station and at the otogar, and the ride takes about five minutes. You can walk it too, but in July and August I do not recommend walking under that sun.

Now the two gates become important. The classic plan is to take a taxi to the upper gate and walk down through the ancient city; you will be going down the hill and see the attractions along the marble streets of Ephesus, and you will come out from the lower gate, where taxis wait for the return. In addition, guests with wheelchairs or limited walking should start from the lower gate instead, because the flattest and smoothest part of the site is there, around the Library of Celsus. You can bring your own mobility vehicle or rent a wheelchair on the entrance of Ephesus.

What I Recommend for Each Kind of Traveller

If you come with a cruise ship to Kuşadası, you have the shortest road of everyone. The ship excursions are dependable and well organized, and the independent guests can reach the site by taxi in half an hour.

If you are an independent traveler with time, take the train. It is slow in a pleasant way, the fields and the orchards pass by the window, and Selçuk station leaves you in the middle of the town.

If you are a family with children, or your time is short, take a taxi or arrange a transfer in advance. The comfort is worth it, especially in the summer heat.

If you are coming from Istanbul for one day, fly. The early flight down and the late flight back give you a full day amongst the ruins, and you will not lose a whole day on the road in each direction.
