Did Choirs Sing in the Ephesus Theater?

Yes, and probably from the very first day. The first theater of Ephesus was a Greek theater, and in Greek theater the chorus was always on the stage. The singers and dancers stood in the orchestra, the flat circle in front of the stage.

The flat floor at the foot of the seats is that orchestra. A choir in the Ephesus theater is not new, it is very old. I explain the history of the building in my post on the Great Theater of Ephesus, and the sound in my post on its acoustics.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many singers were in an ancient Greek chorus?

A tragedy chorus had about fifteen singers and a comedy chorus had twenty-four. They sang and danced together and spoke for the people of the story, so the chorus was almost a character itself.

What does orchestra mean in an ancient theater?

The word comes from Greek and means dancing place. It is the flat round area in front of the stage where the chorus sang and danced, not the group of musicians we call an orchestra today.

Can a choir give a concert in Ephesus Ancient Theater today?

Planned concerts and shows are arranged with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the museum, so a choir that wants to sing should ask well before the trip.
