Ephesus was not only a center of trade and culture, but also a religious center. Therefore, the symbols and structures in the city reflect the religious and cultural beliefs of the period. In this context, the snake symbol can be considered as a reflection of beliefs in the field of health and medicine or trading.

There are two leading theories about Ephesus and Snake Symbol. Let’s take a look at them!

Snake as the Symbol of Medicine

In the ancient city of Ephesus, the snake symbol can also be found in buildings and artifacts related to health and medicine. This symbol may have been used in temples dedicated to Asclepius, the god of health, or in other health-related buildings in antiquity.

The snake symbol is an important symbol associated with health and medicine in the ancient world. This symbol is often depicted as a snake coiled around the staff of Asclepius. Asclepius is known as the god of medicine in Greek mythology, and the snake represents his healing power.

The snake symbol has not only been limited to health and medicine, but has also been associated with concepts such as rebirth, immortality, and wisdom. The shedding of the snake’s skin has been recognized as a symbol of rebirth and regeneration. Therefore, the snake symbol also represents spiritual and physical regeneration. I believe this is also possible when I consider psychotherapy was a popular treatment in Asclepion hospitals which were dedicated to Asclepius.

Snake as the Symbol of Hermes’ Caduceus

Hermes is known as the messenger of the gods in Greek mythology. He is also known for trade, travel, theft and as the guardian of borders. One of the most well-known symbols of Hermes is his staff, called the “Caduceus”. According to mythology, Hermes used this staff to separate two fighting snakes and the snakes coiled around the staff and remained at peace.

Snake as the Symbol of Hermes’ Caduceus

As a messenger between the gods, Hermes is the only god who can also cross into the realm of the dead. For this reason, Hermes is known for his ability to cross borders and build bridges between different worlds. The Caduceus symbolizes this role and emphasizes the importance of Hermes in peace, trade, and communication.

There were several agoras in Ephesus which functioned as shopping areas. Two of these agoras can be visited today. There is no doubt that Caduceus of Hermes would have been related with them.
