Ephesus meets the sea again through the Ephesus Ancient Canal Project, which plans to bring boats back toward the ancient city from the Aegean coast at Pamucak. The sea left Ephesus because the Küçük Menderes River filled the old bay with mud, and today the old harbor lies about 5 kilometers inland.
Work continues at full speed on the ‘Ephesus Ancient Canal Project’, which will bring the Ancient City of Ephesus, one of the important historical values of İzmir, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, to make Ephesus Meets The Sea Again after 2,500 years! The ancient city, which is now 5 kilometers away from the sea, will be made to meet the sea again thanks to this project. Within the first phase of the project; The 600-meter-long canal entrance is being reorganized, and a marina is being built.
A 100-meter-wide, 250-meter-long marina is being built in the area that was the beginning of the Gulf of Ephesus, with a 600-meter-long canal that will provide short-term accommodation for boats.
The Ancient Canal Project, which will bring the ancient city of Ephesus together with the sea, comprises 2 stages. The first phase of the project includes the 600-meter-long entrance canal, the breakwater structure, and the marina. In the second phase, the area from the İzmir-Kuşadası highway to the Ephesus Port will be cleaned and reorganized under the historical texture. When the project is completed, it will be possible to travel to Ephesus with private boats again after 2500 years.
Why Did the Sea Leave Ephesus?
The sea left Ephesus because the Küçük Menderes River, called the Kaystros in ancient times, carried mud into the bay for many centuries. The mud made new land at the river mouth, and the coast moved west, away from the city.
The first settlers lived around the Temple of Artemis, below Ayasuluk Hill, where the sea was probably very near. Around 290 BC King Lysimachus moved the city to place where the ruins stand today, and the harbor kept filling up even after that. The whole story of the city is in my post On Ephesus History.
Kings and Roman governors fought the mud. Attalus II of Pergamon worked on the harbor mouth in the 2nd century BC, but the river kept coming. Roman Governors dredged the harbor again and again, Emperor Hadrian planned to turn the river aside, and later a channel was dug to reach the open sea. Some say boats used the harbor until the 7th century AD.
How Far Is Ephesus From the Sea Today?
From the old harbor basin the sea is about 5 kilometers away today, and from the main ruins it is a few kilometers more. The river kept building land at its mouth, so the beach of Pamucak, where the river meets the Aegean, lies far west of the ancient shore.
You will read different numbers on different pages, because people measure from different places, the harbor basin, the theater or the main gate. What Is the Latest on the Ephesus Canal Project?
In April 2023 the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), which builds the project, said the first stage was 99 percent finished. That stage is the entrance canal and the marina near Pamucak.
The second stage comes after it, it will clean the way from Pamucak toward the old harbor and lay cut stone along the canal. So Ephesus meets the sea again step by step. I have not seen an official date for boats to sail to Ephesus, so please do not plan a boat trip now.
